Last year only 89 of the Georgia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ (GAND) members (out of 1648) voted in the Board of Directors election. That means just 5% of members determined the leadership for the entire affiliate with 95% of GAND members opting out of this important member benefit. Consider these important facts:
Fact #1: When someone joins the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Academy), they select with which state they want to affiliate. There is not a separate fee or form to join the Georgia Academy.
Fact #2: A portion of each member’s Academy dues is returned to the state affiliate selected via a “rebate”. The rebate from the Academy last fiscal year to Georgia was just over $49,000.
Fact #3: The Georgia Academy President, Treasurer, and President-Elect make up the Finance Committee. With input and requests from other members of the Board, the Finance Committee develops a budget for the year. These budgeted items, initiatives, and programs impact Georgia Academy members- both directly and indirectly. Georgia Academy members have a financial interest in who is representing them and their interests at the state level.
Fact #4: The final fact is that all Board members are volunteers. These individuals make a commitment for one year, some more, to serve the Georgia Academy membership on the Board. Some of the responsibilities are very demanding, particularly those for the elected positions.
It only takes a few moments to learn about the nominees and cast a vote in the state, as well as the national (Academy) election. This year there are several Georgia Academy members who were selected for the National ballot, a very prestigious honor. Participation in the elections gives you a voice in our professional efforts locally and nationally.
