The Georgia Board of Examiners of Licensed Dietitians (henceforth the “Board”) administrative staff work very hard to process and issue applications for licensure, and things have changed at the Board office. The licensure process no longer is “delayed”, however with the possible exception of those applications submitted that are incomplete, with deficient items being required that delay processing by the administrative staff. In addition, applications where a background issue is reported (i.e. an arrest, conviction or sanction by another regulatory body) will also cause delays in processing as the Board generally requires a full Board review of the application, depending on the issue reported.
Applications received by the Board’s administrative staff that are complete (application is completely filled out, all supporting documents are provided, fee is paid) are processed and a Georgia license is administratively issued generally within five business days. Provisional licensure, if requested on the application and the separate, additional fee is paid, are also processed with the provisional license administratively issued generally within five business days. Full licensure is issued to provisional licensees upon notifying the Board of the passage of the required exam.
Provisional licenses, just as with full licensure, also are now available for public viewing on the website www.sos.ga.gov/plb. Provisional and fully licensed individuals may print a copy of these licenses themselves from the links on this website, or a written request and the fee of $25 may be mailed to the Board office and one will be printed and mailed to the licensee.
O.C.G.A. 43-11A, the professions “Practice Act” requires proper licensure issued by the Board in order to practice in this state. There are, as with every licensed profession, some exceptions to licensure being required. The Board strongly suggests all licensees, and applicants, go to the Boards website and review the Georgia laws and Board rules regulating the profession. Also on this website are Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s), all forms and applications and much, much more information available. Please be familiar with this website: www.sos.ga.gov/plb/diet.
All licenses renew the same date, every two years: March 31st of every Even Numbered Year. Every license issued is given this same expiration date, regardless of the issuance date, with the only exception being those licenses initially issued just prior to the upcoming, next actual expiration date – these issuances will most likely be given the next biennial expiration/renewal date.
Renewal can be completed online (see Board website for link) or licensees may call 478-207-2440, or toll free 844-753-7825, and request a paper renewal coupon be mailed to them. E-mail reminders are sent out when the renewal cycle opens for renewal of a license every two years. If there is no e-mail address on file, a paper renewal reminder will be sent to the mailing address on file. Please keep your e-mail address on file current. The automated renewal e-mail notification system is not able to monitor invalid e-mail addresses.
Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours are required for the renewal of the professional license every two years. The Board rule, 157-5 Continuing Professional Education, explains the requirements. Licensees are again strongly encouraged to review the Board rules, especially this one regarding CPE Hours required for renewal. There is a link to a chart listing of acceptable CPE activities in the FAQ on the Board website “How will continuing education for licensed dietitians be affected by the new Professional Development Portfolio process of the Commission on Dietetic Registration?”
It is imperative that licensees keep their mailing address, physical address (if different - No P.O. Boxes accepted for a physical address), telephone number(s) and especially a current, active and valid e-mail address on file with the Board office. Failure to do so may result in not receiving notifications regarding renewals, holds on renewals, application issues, etc. The administrative staff utilize e-mail almost exclusively to contact license holders and applicants. Changes to your contact information may be completed by licensees online by following the links on the site www.sos.ga.gov/plb - see menu item “Address & E-Mail Updates” in the License Information tab.
Pursuant to Georgia law, the licensee’s name, mailing address (P.O. Boxes acceptable), license number and license expiration date are publicly available.
